I recently read Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap… and Others Don’t by Jim Collins. This book is an interesting study of 11 companies that were able to outperform their competitors. Collins used very specific criteria to evaluate the companies and determine if they had been good companies and became great. He compared the great companies to companies that were good but did not excel.
One key take away for me was Collins observation that good companies moving toward becoming great hire the best people they can find, first and then determine what they will do. It is a simple concept, yet how many companies actually practice it?
